Here is what one new mum had to say about her experience with Penny the Doula:
“A perfect package –
No words will ever seem adequate to convey how pivotal Penny’s role as doula and antenatal educator was on my personal birth journey.
Through the calmbirth classes, my partner, Orisi and I felt we were more than prepared for what we were yet to experience.
Penny knows exactly what she’s doing from the invaluable breathing techniques, acupressure points, massage and relaxations that proved to be essential during the labour and birth of our precious daughter Nunia.
Through Penny we were educated on all the different paths our journey may have taken and where to go from with each of those scenarios. She taught us how to write an effectual birth plan so when the day arrived we were well informed of the decisions that needed to be made.
Unfortunately my pregnancy went over (post date) and my initial plan of being with Belmont Midwifery Service and having a water birth could not happen.
Instead the birth was to be completely different as I sent to the John Hunter Hospital (JHH) for an induction of labour.
Regardless of how great the care from our assigned midwife at Belmont was, not having Penny as a doula would have been disastrous in my case.
As it turned out our Belmont midwife and her secondary midwife were unavailable due to things out of our control. So, we found ourselves between hospitals, we had fallen between the cracks within the hospital service. But, by Penny’s presence she provided us with stability and confidence to get the job done. Her service to us was unparalleled.
From our antenatal classes, which we had started at 28 weeks, Penny would regularly check in to see how we were traveling and cared about our feelings in the lead up to the due date and beyond.
Despite my birth story being different to how I envisioned it, because of Penny it was an enjoyable experience that I’m happy to look back on.
Going post dates my birth plan quickly became irrelevant but this was okay as we had learnt about change and unexpected events. When the time came we ended up going to a delivery suite at the JHH a place and people we had never even seen nor met before.
Penny accompanied us for the Cervidil procedure to help get by cervix ready for labour and remained in constant contact with us once we where sent home to await the onset of labour.
The following morning at 1am my waters released and so I rang Penny to tell her that we where starting to make our way back to the hospital.
To my surprise she was there waiting for us in the foyer. Penny led us to the delivery suite and gently eased and re-assured us into the new environment. We feel if not having Penny could have been an overwhelming experience for us.
Early labour started and things were progressing nicely. My baby was positioned posterior, which during contractions gave me intense lower back pain. Penny offered ways on how to counteract the pain through effective acupressure, movements and soothing through relaxation exercises.
As my labour progressed with exhaustion kicking in; Penny knew what was needed to be done as my Doula. She supported me with my choices and knew what options were available and as it turned out the water injections that I had were the turning point in my labour for I very quickly progressed to the second stage.
During the second stage of labour our baby’s heart rate had escalated and it was imperative that she be delivered. The room filled with various medical professionals. Feeling overwhelmed I closed my eyes and it was Penny who quietly spoke to Orisi and I and calmly coached us through what was happening and what needed to be done. Throughout our delivery, she was the one calm voice I focused upon..
Post-birth Penny continues to check in on how our new family are, plus providing factual information for our questions that assists my developing knowledge as a mum.
Penny’s philosophy of a community raises a child is reflected in her monthly coffee mornings that she holds at the Calm Connexions Education centre to expecting and new parents. The morning offers an opportunity to learn from guest speakers. Also the chance to talk to other new parents and the guest speaker is good to understand you are not alone.
